Description

In this authentic mas, a traditional Provencal farm from the 17th and 18th century in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence you’ll get the real feeling of the Provence. This mas hasn’t lost its authenticity at all during the last centuries. Madeleine has created a place where the typical character of this admirable region is still present with all its famous perfumes and colors. The mas is owned by Madeleine’s family since centuries and the beautiful domain stole her heart since she was a child. She would love to share her passion with her guests and will tell you everything about its history from the time that her family kept silkworms to produce silk and cultivated the medical plant ‘Rubia tinctorum’ or madder.

The large and tastefully decorated bedroom of more than 35m2, situated on the second floor of the 400m2 large mas, home to your host, still breaths the atmosphere of the 17th century with traditional wooden beams, chandelier, fireplace, authentic Provencal furnishings and several family pieces such as the paintings and mirror that decorate the wall. In this part of the mas was situated the old attic with ‘magnanerie’, a place where the silkworms were kept. You enter the romantic bedroom by a beautiful stone-made staircase (with a 160cm two person bed) with a stylish bathroom (with bath) 'en suite' and separate toilet. The bedroom has a magnificent view of the garden.

On the domain of 5000m2 are the mas and the breathtaking park like garden that shows the southern European character with its cypress, pine trees, olive trees and several varieties of palm trees. You will be captivated by all the flowers in the garden - surrounding the swimming pool, and flowering during the year. The plane trees, typical for the Provence, offer enough shade on one of the terraces for enjoying the tranquility and quietness of the domain.

You can enjoy your sumptuous breakfast, served by your host of course, under the shadow of the pergola, covered with numerous purple lilacs, on one of the ‘salons’ on the large terrace on the front side of the mas or in the chic stylish 18th century dining room with its authentic antique tiles and where Madeleine sets the table with real family silverware.

The mas enjoys a well equipped kitchen with covered terrace, situated on the back side of the mas to ensure the guests’ independance and privacy. You can prepare your own lunch or dinner if desired and a barbecue is at your disposal as well. Just follow the path alongside the lovely little creek that flows next to it.

The centre of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is just a ten minutes walk. This Provencal village with its rich past and its idyllic small streets and houses surrounded by a landscape attracted many famous painters like Vincent van Gogh who got inspired by the beautiful colors and light of this part of Provence. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence has many terraces to have a nice drink, the loveliest boutiques, a traditional market, galleries and musea. The Alpilles is a perfect area for hiking or taking the bike. Don’t forget to visit places like Les-Baux-de-Provence and Arles.
